The Florida Department of Transportation may install four controversial mid-block crossings with pedestrian-activated flashing-yellow lights along State Road A1A in Cocoa Beach.

But the FDOT proposal comes on the heels of last year's political movement seeking to remove the "rectangular rapid flashing beacons" from SR A1A crosswalks altogether. A Surfside Elementary sixth grader was fatally struck at a Satellite Beach crosswalk in December 2019, generating community outcry.
